Phonemic awareness.
Phonemic awareness — hearing and manipulating individual sounds — is the single strongest predictor of reading fluency. Clapping syllables creates a physical, auditory, and visual anchor that prevents the blending errors most struggling readers make.
1. Say 'cat'. 2. Clap for c-a-t (3 claps). 3. Try 'dog'. 4. Try 'elephant'.
