The balance metaphor for equations is cognitively elegant because it makes the core rule (whatever you do to one side, do to the other) physically obvious. Students who learn algebra through balance models retain the concept of equivalence in ways that symbol manipulation alone does not build.
1. Draw balance. 2. Put x+3 on left. 3. Put 7 on right. 4. Remove 3 from both sides. 5. Find x.
